Environment Accreditation For Fijian Holdings Subsidiary
Fiji Industries Limited (FIL) was recently awarded ISO 14001 certification by Systems Certification Body, Telarc SAI Limited. ISO 14001 is an internationally accepted standard that sets out how an organization puts in place an effective Environment Management System (EMS). The Fijian Holdings subsidiary, in the last 10 years, introduced into its operations processes that minimized or stopped negative effects on the environment such as the emission of dust and water runoffs. FIL invested heavily in dust control systems all over its processes and settling ponds to filter runoffs. It changed its operations from a full wet and dry cement manufacturing to a dry cement grinding system which cost the company $4.6m. FIL’s commitment to be environmentally conscious resulted in the discontinuation of dredging of coral sand from the Suva harbour and the elimination of soot and dust produced during clinker production which previously covered the company’s surrounding vegetation. General Manager, Mr Josese Daveta said, “FIL had to go through two sets of audits until our environment system was in line with the ISO 14001 requirements resulting in the certification”. The environment certification is the first given in Fiji by Telarc SAI Limited which is another milestone achievement for Fiji Industries Limited. About FIL: Fiji Industries Ltd (FIL) is the premier supplier of cement in Fiji and is the preferred supplier of Pacific island countries. FIL has been in operation for over 48 years and produces world class quality cement that is used in both private and public projects all over Fiji and other island nations in the region.
